Known in the early years as Owatonna Manufacturing Company, Mustang was among the first manufacturers to offer the skid steer in 1965. Today, the skid steer loader is complimented with track loaders, articulated loaders, and compact excavators.

The Mustang brand was acquired by Manitou when it bought Gehl Company in 2008. The buyout followed a telescopic loader partnership between Manitou and Gehl, formed in 2004. Gehl bought Mustang Manufacturing in 1997.
